What’s new in Magento Open Source 2.3.2?

This new Magento Open Source version includes 200+ functional fixes, 350+ pull requests from the community and 75+ security enhancements. Let us find out in greater detail what distinct features do this version contains.

#1: Substantial security enhancements

These security improvements secure the operation of your Magento store and upgrade the level of user-friendliness of your ecommerce.

75 brand-new security enhancements enable:

  • close cross-site scripting (XSS),
  • remote code execution (RCE),
  • sensitive data disclosure vulnerabilities and other security issues.

However, certain can potentially be used to access clients data or take over admin sessions. All usable security issues fixed in this release (2.3.2) have been ported to 2.2.9, 2.1.18, 1.14.4.2, and 1.9.4.2.

Apart from this, Google reCAPTCHA module for PayPal Payflow checkout extension was introduced. This new module adds Google reCAPTCHA and CAPTCHA to the Payflow Pro checkout form. This function has been introduced to combat harmful targeting of Magento deployments that implement Payflow Pro. We have dedicated the article to CAPTCHA in Magento and how to work with it; follow the link to find out more.

#2: Performance boosts

  • Redesign of checkout page to support customers working with many addresses.

Now finally we got an opportunity to find the addresses in the checkout page on the Select shipping and Billing address steps. This option can considerably improve checkout performance for clients with a great number of addresses. It is disabled by default and must be enabled from the back office.

  • Significant improvement to storefront page response time.

Magento introduced several essential changes in the page response times for the catalog, search, and advanced search pages.

  • Improved concurrent access to block cache storage.

This was a critical issue for all Magento store owners and needed to be improved. Now, the concurrent access to the block cache was advanced, which has increased the response of storefront pages under high load by around 20%.

  • Product page gallery load optimization.

Product images are now loaded as fast as other page content and don’t need additional time to load completely.

  • Improved page rendering through deferred loading and parsing of storefront JavaScript.

All non-critical JavaScript code has been shifted to the bottom of storefront pages, which increases the speed of page rendering. Also, it enables users to see the whole page faster while irrelevant elements remain inactive. If you want to have this performance improvement, you should go to Stores > Configuration > Developer > JavaScript Settings and enable the Move JS code to the bottom of the page option.

#3: Infrastructure improvements

Infrastructure is a vital aspect of every ecommerce enterprise for customer satisfaction and retention, and Magento paid careful attention to this area of its ecommerce solution.   There are 130 enhancements in this release, which increase the Framework quality and these modules: Catalog, Sales, Checkout/One Page CheckoutUrlRewrite, Customer/Customers, and UI.

Let’s consider the most important ones:

  • Braintree payment method is now supported for checkout with multiple addresses.

In previous releases, you didn’t have the opportunity to use Braintree and Braintree PayPal when checking out with multiple addresses. Now, store owners are happy to get the expanded number of payment gateways and the customers – larger number of payment option.

  • The CGI URL gateway in UPS module has been updated from HTTP to HTTPS.

The CGI URL gateway endpoint in the UPS module has been modernized from HTTP to HTTPS in response to the disablement of the HTTP gateway by UPS in mid-2019.

  • Google chart API updated to the Image-Charts.

We have been waiting for this feature to be introduced in Magento platform. Now Magento enables to use the Image-Charts free service to render static charts in Admin dashboards.
